Re: Missing Issue from Master index

I added Mar. 28 1930 and several other issues to the master index on Tuesday night.

I noticed that I had hidden my old index file from Katherine when I created the new one, so she was unable to do it herself. I've transferred my old index file back to the Indexing folder on the Network so it's accessible if anyone needs to double check anything.

Issue 17 March 1870 is missing on microfilm

1870 has a different numeration, the first issue is Vol. 3. No. 3, whole No. 107. I started numeration from issue 001. We have to think about creating newspaper bibliography for the whole period, so we actually know how issues were numbered and the dates of publication.

Sergey

All 1869 issues except Jan 7 (#55) and Jan 14 (# 56) are missing on microfilm.

Sergey

Page newmarket_courier_1869_01_14_056_02 is damaged on microfilm. Eventually, we need to look at positives we have in the library and may be at originals at the Museum to replace damaged images.

Sergey

Hi Katherine,

I just noticed that March 28, 1930 is indexed on Our Ontario but the information is missing from the Master Index file.

Thanks,

Julia

Issue 52 of 1868 is missing on microfilm

Issue 45 of 1868 is missing on microfilm

Sergey

Issue 43 of 1868 is missing on microfilm

Issues 37, 38, 39 and 40 of 1868 are missing on microfilm.
The quality of microfilm is very bad. We need to discuss the way we scan positives on Tuesday with Andrea and all people involved in scanning. Now I am scanning with higher brightness in order to remove dirty background. As long as the text is readable, we are ok. From my perspective the quality is not much from what we have in the library.

Sergey

In the 11 July 1935 issue of the Newmarket Era, there is a Birth for 'Pollock' as well as a Death for 'Pollock.' When indexing the second occurence of Pollock in this issue, upon pressing 'save and display' I was automatically redirected to the first occurence of Pollock. I am not sure why this is happening but it seems another glitch has been found in Knowledge Ontario. Note that I have added the dead Pollock to the Excel Spreadsheet, but am not able to enter it to Knowledge Ontario. I just thought this would be of interest to other indexers.

Page 3 of the Newmarket Era August 31, 1934 seems to be missing. There is no thumbnail.

Update: the page is there but the thumbnail has not been created.

Bert

The correct date is September 2, 1937
I have fixed png files
Please, take care of master files

Sergey

pages 7 and 8 are missing from this issue
missing page png files uploaded

Sergey

For those who are going to spend some hours indexing over the holidays, here are the assigned issues:

Bert: September 1934 - December 1934
Erik: January 1935 - June 1935
Nathaniel: July 1935 - December 1935
Katherine: January 1936 - June 1936

If you don't finish the assigned months, just continue working on them after the holidays during regular work hours.

If you are very industrious and need more issues to work on, update this post with the issues you're taking.

Thank you!

Missing Issue and pages

On the microfilm for 1956, there are some pages and an issue missing.
For Issue 25 (June 28, 1956), there are only four pages (1-4) and Issue 26 is missing.
I have noted this in the Missing Issues/Pages folder and will add the missing page png.

Julia.

Master files for issue number 20, year 1937, were dated incorrectly June 10. They should be renamed to June 17. I have corrected png files.

Sergey

One more point regarding the duplication, etc. of indexed entries. If you wish to proof read issues where duplicates may appear, simply enter the date for a particular issue (under "Update Single Issue of Newspaper") and review the thumbnails, or alternatively, click the "review current issue" option on the toolbar. This allows you to browse the entries for each thumbnail.

When indexing through Knowledge Ontario , sometimes while trying to enter a record the site begins to lag/turns up error screen etc. We have found out today that every time you press enter or click on the 'save and display' button a record has been inputted. Therefore there are multiple duplicates of our index records. In the future everybody should check the records after one of these 'lags' occurs to make sure your record hasn't already been uploaded.

Hi guys,
Just a reminder. When you are scanning, please ensure that you have the correct settings in place. The computers like to throw us off sometimes, and we assume that JPEG compression was set by the computer on CapturePerfect yesterday. This is problematic for our master files, as they compress the image to unreadable levels. So just have a quick check before you scan, and as you scan to ensure that the correct settings are in place.

Issue date

Please be aware that on occasion pages may be dated incorrectly as for example in the January 5th, 1934 issue of the Newmarket Era. This can happen when the new year rolls around and the newspaper template for the year is not updated.

Bert

PNG files in Feb. 25, 1937 issue were named incorrectly as newmarket_era_1937_03_18_008_01, newmarket_era_1937_03_18_008_02, etc. This has been corrected. Please, update master files.

Page 4 is missing from February 25, 1937 issue.

Pages 3 and 4 in an October 1953 issue (41 or 42 i think) are missing. I have alerted Julia to that fact and have created a folder for the year and the concomitant text files in the "Missing ..." directory so that they have been logged.

Please note that I have not yet put Andrea's blank "missing pages" notification into the appropriate folder. I will do this on Monday!

Bert

There is no file newmarket_era_1936_06_25_021_08.png, so I assume that page 8 for June 25, 1936 is missing. Please, check. I have uploaded missing page file for now.

Sergey

04 and 05 from newmarket_era_1931_02_20_003 are missing. I've added txt files to the missing pages file in DLAB.

Sarah

For images where the scanner has added addition white space such as:

I have written a second customized script in Photoshop under Actions to increase our PNG image height from 120cm to 150cm. The idea is that the extra 30 cm will compensate for the additional white space created by the scanner. Therefore when you crop out the white space during editing the final image will be close to our ideal size of 120cm in height.

The script is as follows:

The script should always be run from the original Tiff Master Files. If a batch is run with our regular script, please rerun the script to replace the PNGs.

Hi everyone,

I created a folder for all of the missing issues and pages.

It is located in: S:\DLAB\Missing Issues or Pages

Julia

I have made a PNG image file for missing pages called Missing Page.PNG

It is located S:\DLAB\Images\master files

Please feel free to copy it and save it in your personal folders.

Andrea

Issue Number and Section Discrepancies – Newmarket Era
Solutions for Knowledge Ontario

Issue numbering discrepancies
newmarket_era_and_express_1949_05_05_019
• i.e. 018
newmarket_era_and_express_1949_05_19_021
• i.e. 020
newmarket_era_and_express_1949_05_26_022
• i.e. 021
Solution: Issues re-numbered sequentially by scanners and note made of discrepancies.

Section discrepancies
newmarket_era_and_express_1949_12_01_048
• indicates two sections but Section B is not identified; pagination is continuous through entire issue
Solution: if pagination is continuous and there is no indication of a second section, use continuous pagination as if it were one issue.

Pagination and page duplication issues
newmarket_era_and_express_1949_09_15_37
• has 2 front pages for the same issue. The pages were identical except for the main headline.
Solution: scan in both pages and use continuous pagination; only OCR and index one of the pages.

Supplemental pages
newmarket_era_and_express_1949_12_22_051_01
• has two supplemental pages between pages 2 & 3
Solution: paginate these pages as “a” and “b” (and by extension “c” etc.) and derive the numbering from the immediately preceding page. Example for this issue:
• [file-name]_1949_12_22_051_02a
• [file-name]_1949_12_22_051_02b
